Outline Concept
“Our scheme reacts to the environmental conditions of the site and its urban surrounding, thus promoting the ECB´s commitment to the City of Frankfurt and its inhabitants. The new ECB building balances the historic landmark of the Grossmarkthalle, acting as an architectural counterweight. At the same time it forms a characteristic landmark which once may become an icon, known and associated with this institution all over the world – the ‚new home‘ of the ECB.

Our aim is to retain the listed Grossmarkthalle as original as possible and to create minimal interference with the magnificent old structure. Taking full advantage of its spatial quality, the Hall acts as an interface between the ECB and various external bodies it stands in contact with.

Single units are joined to form the overall shape of the building, which becomes more than just an addition of elements but a ‚super-motive‘. All required office floor space is condensed into a centralised volume acting as a vertically stacked city. Separate six-story-high units are linked into a modular structure. This will always appear ‚complete‘ allowing for growth at any time.

The curved shapes of the single units achieve a quality working environment for employees, joining the benefits of smaller units with the advantages of a tower scheme. The scheme combines spatial efficiency, short distances, good orientation and natural ventilation. Further, the shape of the units allows for all staff to enjoy great views over the city. The composition of various types of spaces, offices, sky-gardens and multizones creates an inspiring atmosphere and fosters interaction and communication between people.”
